The Korean War was an ideological conflict between Communism and Capitalism. Approximately 4 million casualties were reported during the devastating war in which about 20 countries participated. The U.S. launched a psychological war against the Communist prisoners of war(POWs) to prove the ideological excellence of Liberalism. In fact, the Korean War was the only chance for the Capitalists to contact Communists in person during the peak of the Cold War. Therefore, the U.S. saw the Korean War as a chance to spread Liberalism, especially the American faith and values, across the nation.
Ideology became a mean of war, through encouraging communist POWs to change their faith and think through education. For this, it was essential to spread the excellence of Capitalism in both moral and physical terms. As a part of this effort, education continued on about 170,000 Communist POWs. Since the outbreak of the war, a POW camp was established to guarantee the safety of POWs in accordance with the 1949 Geneva Conventions. In addition, a Civil Information and Education (CIE) program was launched. Under the CIE program, the dissemination of Individualism, Capitalism and religious education became the mainstream. Therefore, the education on the Communist POWs during the Korean War can be defined as Education for Americanization. After all, the Communist prisoners were led to accept the American values and modernization and oppose Communism.
The CIE program had two major educational goals; spread of Liberalism to Communist POWs and dissemination of Christianity. After all, the Korean War became a great opportunity for the U.S. to spread its values around the world through the POW education policy of the Civil Information and Education Section. Therefore, we can investigate how Communists accepted liberal ideology and became Democrats and Christians. It was the Reeducation of POW which was used by the U.S. in a psychological warfare during the Cold War. Of course, this kind of plan was based on a strategic purpose, yet it has been historically proven that the confidence in American values such as Democracy, Individualism and Protestantism spread to Asian people through the education.
