Sexual assault is a well-recognised problem, but there has been remarkably little research on men as perpetrators. Preventing sexual assault severely hampered by lack of research on sexual assault. This study examines the realities of sexual assault. And, it reviews various prevention efforts to sexual assault in three countries-the United States, Germany, Japan. And it suggests the methods preventing sexual assault recidivism.
Official statistics compiled from 1997 to 2006 were utilized to investigate sexual assault. Court trial records were also used to study the realities of sexual assault. The total cases were 1,014. And survey was conducted using questionnaires. Data were collected from 658 sex offenders.
Data from official statistics show that the number of sex offenders has generally increased. As to age of sex offenders, twenties, thirties are most, followed by forties, teens. As to age of victims, 16-20 years of age are most, followed by twenties, thirties. More than half of sex offenders committed sexual assault toward stranger.
The results from court trial records and survey are as follows:
Concerning the sexual assault incidents, sexual assaults appear to occur mostly on outdoors or public places. And, sexual assaults appear to occur mostly at midnight and dawn. As to the socio-demographic characteristics of sex offenders, it is found that most of sex offenders are relatively young(twenties and thirties), males. And most of them had the education of no more than high school. As to the characteristics of victims, it is found that victims are mostly young(age below 29). And most of them had the education of no more than high school.
As to the types of sex offenders, those who target children and juveniles tend to commit sexual assaults in their homes, while sex offenders against adults tend to commit sexual assaults in lodging houses or entertainment spots. Juvenile sex offenders tend to commit sexual assaults on outdoors than adult sex offenders. Impulsive sexual desire was attributed as main motive for commission of sexual assault. But, percentage of 'impelled by curiosity' is relatively high among juvenile sex offenders. And sexual assaults by juveniles tend to be committed by a group rather than by a single person. As to age of sex offenders against children, thirties and forties are most. Especially, percent of 60 years of age or older is relatively high. Juvenile sex offenders tend to committ sexual assaults against juveniles. And percentage of children and twenties victims is relatively high among juvenile sex offenders. About a half of sexual assaults by adults were committed against twenties(including 19 years of age). As to perpetrator-victim relationship, most sex assaults againt children were committed by strangers. Also, percentage of sexual assaults by neighbors was relatively high. Juvenile sex offenders tend to commit sexual assaults against friends. Adult sex offenders tend to commit sexual assaults against strangers. In regard to psychological characteristics, those who commit against children more strongly endorsed rape myths relating rape against children. And sex offenders who did recommit a sexual offense more strongly endorsed rape myths relating rape against children. Based on findings in this study, it suggests several ways for reducing sexual assault recidivism.
