The purpose of this study is to test empirically the hypothesis that parents child-rearing would be effected on juvenile delinquency mediated by child's self-control. The data used in this study are drawn from a self-reported survey conducted in Seoul in November, 2000. The sample consists of a total of 512 high school students aged between 15 and 19. In this study, parental child rearing is conceptualized as having four components; attachment, regulation, supervision, and punishment. Children's self-control is measured by 12-items reflecting the tendencies of cognitive and behavioral aspects such as impulsivity, simple tasks, risk seeking, physical activity, self-centered, and temper. Involvement in criminal behavior is measured for offences committed over past one year. It is indexed by two types of crime: status delinquency and series delinquency. To examine the causal and mediate relationship between social class and self-reported criminal behavior, we used Joreskog and Sorbom's LISREL Ⅷ.
Major findings of our analyses are as follows. Parental child rearing such as attachment, supervision, and punishment has an indirect effect on criminal behavior through children's self-control. And children's self-control is strongly related to criminal behavior in the direct way. Thus, it appears to be an important predictor of delinquency, criminal and analogous behavior. In sum, it may be said that this results support Gottfredson and Hirschi's self-control theory.
