This study empirically tested the general propositions of self-control theory (Gottfredson and Hirschi, 1990), using a data set of Korean girl sample. Specifically, self-control is operationalized by combining both attitudinal items and behavioral ones and tested using criteria of reliability and validity. Following tests mainly focus on generality of self-control theory. The measure of self-control is related to four different types of crime and delinquency. Age effect, independent from self-control, on crime is also tested.
Overall, the test results support the claims of self-control theory. Findings from the validity tests of the self-control index show theoretically expected relations with gender and delinquent status. Test results show that girls low on self-control are more likely than others to have committed four different types of crime and delinquency. Research findings show that school girls tend to commit more status delinquency as they grow older in their teens; however, age effect was not found in crime mainly due to small variance of crime in school girl subsample.
Comparative analysis between attitudinal measure and behavioral one of self-control was also conducted. Behavioral measure of self-control has an edge on attitudinal one because it has greater variance in the light of the fact that actions speak louder than words. At the same time, researcher needs to be attentive when he/she chooses items for behavioral measure of self-control in order not to meet possible problem of tautology. Research findings show that officially delinquent juveniles under custody are more likely to have the social desirability of answers and that behavioral measure of self-control is less likely to be biased by the total institution. Further research implications are also discussed.
