칸트에서 자연미의 경험은 문화적으로 성숙된 상태에서만 가능하면서, 동시에 우리를 문화의 고양으로 이끈다. 논문은 이러한 특성을 담고 있는 칸트의 자연미에 담긴 문화의 의미를 밝힌 뒤, 그것이 오늘날에도 현재성을 담고 있는 심미적 범주인가를 묻고 있다. 이를 위해서 아도르노 미학의 논의를 함께 살펴보고 있다.
논문은 칸트의 자연미가 도구적 합리성으로 완전히 환원되거나 혹은 그것과 철저하게 무관한 채로 놓여 있는 심미적 범주가 아니라, 도구적 합리성과 관계하면서 동시에 바로 그러한 한에서 그것과 구별되고 그것으로 환원되지 않는 심미적 범주로 재구성될 수 있는 가능성에 열려 있음을 지적하는 것으로 끝을 맺고 있다.
