Increase of Latino population has caused the changes in paradigm of racial issues in American society, as well as provided new point of view on the identities which constitute their own cultural identities, through conflicts and negotiations with dominant culture. Since the Latinos are the most rapidly growing ethnic group, the established paradigm of the black and white has reached its limit on the racial problems in United States of America. Therefore, discussions on their experiences and their identities will provide a valuable reference on the American culture and their identities.
It can be said that the space in which they are placed is the "border". They have constituted a "border" culture or "between" culture and identities, without belonging to their native culture completely or being assimilated to the new culture. Latinos are establishing a new country without the physical territory, if the nation-state in modern days established an 'imaginary community' within its territory marked by physical border line. Though, it may be an overstatement to see their unity in a political context. it is a noteworthy to look at the political and cultural characteristics of Latino community.
In this paper, I have tried to provide theoretical viewpoint of how to understand Latino culture by examining how the cultural identities of Latinos are constituted, which are endlessly changing due to constant flows of the Latino immigrants. First of all, I have examined the various effects of categorization of "Hispanic" or "Latino", and then examined the identity issue of Latinos by the characteristics of each time period, the time period when they were constantly asked to be assimilated to the dominant culture, period when they asserted their own nationalism against these demands, and the period when they constituted their own cultural identities. Also, I have tried to clarify the characteristics of Latinos issue, by paying attention to the process of how Latino/a studies are formed and accomplished. Through these processes, I hope to confirm the current status of Latino/a studies which has been neglected due to the "border" characteristics of Latinos, and take this as an opportunity to expand related discussion.
