"Doctor Faustus" is a novel about a musician and at the same time is a music novel First, because of the music comparable composition, (eg leitmotiv, polyphony) and additionally the music forms a central point of reference for different ranges of topics in the fictitious musician's biography The considerable musical and historical details were received to a large extent in this novel by the processing of Adorno's thoughts
In accordance with the report of Thomas Man, Adorno's 'philosophy of the new music' reads itself like a comment to music-theoretical reflections of Leverkuhns and the music-historical descriptions in the novel. Apart from this study of Schonberg, Thomas Man also read some other writings of Adorno Many transfers from Adorno's writings are to be proven in the novel Therefore it is said, Adorno was "not only advisor, but co-author of 'Doctor Faustus'
But the past research essentially does not go beyond the proofs of the passage transfer In view of the transfer of many passages from the writings of Adorno, of which not few express his central art-philosophical motives, it is assumed that in this novel, beyond the music-theoretical details, his substantially central ideas were taken up, whether conscious or unconscious
After Adorno, the art is interlaced with the society of their time Works of art are the unconscious historiography of their epoch Without being conscious of it the artist expresses the society in his work, because the material itself, with which the artist argues, is historical and socially determined
Adorno's thesis of the "double character of the art as autonomous and as fait social" enables Thomas Man to set Leverkuhns musical developments and the political development in parallel without having to give up his artistic substrate, ie his life topic, "justification of the art by the art"
In the novel the music functions as Signum of the epoch through the reproduction of the social 'Verdinglichung', with which the values of the individuality and the humane sphere are destroyed After Adorno, art implies realization of the reality At the work of art the truth about dominant social conditions can be detected The art opposes the society through identification with that, against what it rebels The contradictions and the negativity of the world are reflected in the immanent form of the work of art Therefore through its shape the art shows realizations about the mechanisms of the modern 'administered world'
In Adornos philosophy the shape of truth can be won only by the negation of the completed negativity of the world Only if art takes up the dark moment to itself, it can awake hope and longing The 'new music' represents the reconciliation only utopian, in order to avoid all affirmative Paradoxically, the art brings in the absolute negation of the social contradictions a utopian moment to the appearance
