This paper examines Masuji Ibuse's Street of Flowers and General Yobae, which must have been nourished by the author's experience of draft into the World War II. The author was conscripted to Singapore and was teaching Japanese History at Shonan School. In Street of Flowers, Kiyama, who must have been modeled after the author, is interested in only collecting antiques, which was Ibuse's hobby in fact, while Ganda, the Principal, is enthusiastically devoted to instructing the Japanese language. By manifesting Kiyama's indifference vis-a-vis instructing Japanese, the author says indirectly that Ibuse himself was not entangled in military policies.1)
In Street of Flowers, the author describes puddles, made from hollow ground by bombing, that are full of ‘Chapakas’ and their fragrance, instead of focusing on horrible picture of occupied land. From certain point of view, this motive can be regarded as loyalty to his duty as a drafted novelist. However, it was in fact a paradoxical expression of his condolence for dead Chineses who were thrown to those puddles. He must have wanted to engrave the battleground in his work by focusing on puddles made by bombing. Flowers, dramatically contrasting with the war, were expression of Ibuse's resistance to the war and his eagerness for the peace.
During the war period, Ibuse couldn't help concealing devastation of ordinary people's life, be they Japanese or from other countries, and consciousness of devastation. However, after the war, he expresses this consciousness of devastation bluntly. In General Yobae, the author puts nickname of 'General Yobae' to Yuichi, who modeled a simple follower of militarism. Lieutenant Gurida. and makes fool of Yuichi to the contents of the author's heart. The author brings Yuichi into ridicule by labeling him as 'picture of militarism' or 'foolish invader.' The author curses the war as 'all the fanatics' play.'
The author symbolizes Japan as a dogged mother, who made 'concrete gates' and drew water from a well with a 'iron bucket,' but eventually send his children to battlefield. The author alludes per Yuichi and his mother that it is the responsibility of all Japan and all the Japaneses who followed militarism and fostered 'General Yobae.'
General Yobae is a textbook novel which accuses the aftermath of Japanese militarism. Japanese people may not dream of any war or invasion any more by reading General Yobae. It is often said that Ibse's works are 'literature of humor.' But it is not a humor to move readers to delightful laughter but a one to provoke a bitter smile of retrospecting self-torture. He just makes a caricature of endless absurdity of human being.
