The goal of this article is to determine the location of 'Ni River'(泥河) mentioned in SamGuk-SaGi (History of Three Kingdoms). To achieve this goal, for starters, the author reviewed several theories that determined the location of 'Ni River.' On this basis the author presented and analyzed new historical and geographical data, reviewed archeological data, and interpreted historical materials, and concluded that 'Ni River' is highly likely to be the upper and uppermost regions of the Namhan River.
In view of historical records and archeological data, Shilla advanced into Gangneung very quickly. Perhaps, the historical background is that Gangneung was the midpoint on the way to Jipan, the old capital of Goguryeo. In other words, it is possible that there was a traffic route from Gyeongju, through Gangneung, Wonsan, Hamheung, Hwangcho-mountain pass to Jipan.
Given the archeological materials, Shilla advanced west from Samcheok and Gangneung toward the upper region of the Namhan River. In this region there are mountain fortresses that can be connected to 'Chukseong Gisa (accounts of fortress construction)' described in the literature, and Shilla earthenware was excavated inside the fortresses. Therefore, it is most likely that it is the 'Ni River' mentioned in SamGuk-SaGi.
Also, the administrative names located in the uppermost and upper regions of the Namhan River during the Unified Shilla period were related to rivers (江) and banks (堤), and 'Nae (川) -' and 'Ni (川) -' have similar pronunciations. Thus, it seems that the upper and uppermost regions of the Namhan River can be regarded as the 'Ni River' in SamGuk-SaGi. Considering the area under the jurisdiction of Myeongju during the Unified Shilla period, it is highly likely that the 'Ni River' is the section of the Namhan River including Jeongseon-gun, a town under the direct control of Myeongju (Gangneung) or Yeongwol-gun, which is part of Myeongju.
As Goguryeo attacked Sjiljik (Samcheok) from the side with the central region (Chungju) serving as its base, in response, Shilla constructed fortresses off the 'Ni River,' which is the upper and uppermost region of the Namhan River. In addition, at a similar time, the Samnyeon mountain fortress was constructed in Boeun. This means that Shilla reinforced and stabilized its major border defense line. Actually there had been no historical material describing Goguryeo's lateral attack on Shilla out of the central region since then. Perhaps because of this, afterwards, Goguryeo moved from the central region (Chungju) in 481 through inland Gyeongsang-bukdo to Heunghae.
Goguryeo's lateral attack through the upper region of the Namhan River and Shilla's construction of fortresses in response led to the installation of Shiljik-ju and Haslla-ju, and has great implications in understanding the scope of military areas.
