This paper examines and compares two types of honorification for addressee in Korean: honorification for addressee by the addressee honorific markers -(e)yo and (su)pnita and honorification for addressee by the subject honorific marker -si, which is used when addressee and subject indicate the same person. The information on these two types of honorification for addressee is marked on verbs in Korean, and their absence and presence produce four different verbal forms. It is noted that, among these four verbal forms, the one with only the subject honorific marker -si (used for addressee) is considered pragmatically infelicitous. The spoken data taken form two Korean dramas reveal that there is an order in dropping the two types of honorification for addressee: if a person uses both subject and addressee honorification for an addressee that he/she first meets, he/she generally drops the subject honorific marker earlier than the addressee honorific marker. And this order explains why the verbal form with only the subject honorific marker -si is infelicitous in Korean. The comparison of addressee honorification and general subject honorification is also provided, and it is pointed out that addressee honorification is more important than subject honorification. This importance of addressee honorification over subject honorification explains why Korean speakers drop subject honorification earlier than addressee honorification when both types of honorification are used for addressee.
