In Early 20th Century, The Meiji government and the Tokyo Imperial University was producing the ‘Oriental Studies’ and the ‘Chinese Studies’ as academic knowledge of Asia, which was an articulation of western studies, Japanese national studies, and Japanese-Chinese studies. It was a product of the sub-orientalism which was aimed to marginalize the neighbor countries and to mimic the Western as the new center of the world.
On the same period, Qing dynasty and imperial university of Peking was producing the other kind of academic knowledge, which was called as ‘Chinese substance and Western function’. It was a not-segmented form of academic knowledge of Chinese studies, which was supplemented by western studies. It is needed to be seen as an alternative articulation type of academic knowledge against western studies.
