Letters of credit are often considered the lifeblood of the export and import sector because of their critical function. However, inconsistent documents presentation frequently leads to being turned down by bankers and many of those documents are non-transport documents.
It is noticeable that studies on the standard for examination of non-transport documents were insufficient in spite of the importance of these documents.
Therefore, in this study we are focusing on the standards for examination of non-transport documents. Our goal is to assist credit practitioners, as well as the export and import industries, by recommending solutions.
We have reviewed UCP600 regarding commercial invoices, bill of exchanges, insurance documents and certificates of origin. The most significant change to these documents is that there is more room for negotiation and honour than turning down citing discrepancies based on minor discrepancies.
Overall, it is believed that this revision(UCP600) will both help practitioners and increase the frequency in which letters of credit are used. However there are a few things that should be considered before the next revision draft, if any, such as the addresses on commercial invoices and the relation between the date of the insurance document and the date of actual shipment, also the calculations associated with the maturity of the bill of exchange.
While UCP600 does not solve all the disputes and uncertainties, it certainly helps to better clarify the rules concerning letters of credit. We strongly recommend that issues above mentioned should be revised for future revisions.
