In the beginning was the Revolution. "Nos ancetres les Gaulois" are indeed part of the legacy of the French Revolution, because the sans-culotte Gauls, having cast out the aristocratic Franks, had to reassert their pedigree, their past as base of a new national history. The almost obsessive preoccupation of the revolutionaries with the origin resulted in an overflow of historical writings.
It fell to nineteenth-century French historians to rewrite foundation myths. Vercingetorix, defeated adversary of Caesar, was unearthed and brought to life by historians such as Amedee Thierry, Henri Martin, Camille Jullian to play an essential role in the new national history. Hero defeated but glorious, the Gloria Victis incarnation was a collective masterpiece.
The illustrations of Henri Martin's Histoire de France populaire, however, are particularly interesting. He had used, for example, the standing Vercingetorix in front of Caesar in the first edition (1868), but for the second one (1886) put Vercingetorix on horse, even though he didn't change a single word in the text. For his popular public, the visualized story could tell the history much more explicitly than the words. This magnificent Vercingetorix on horse was reproduced ad nauseam in schoolbooks.
Then two world wars inevitably brought about profound alterations. "Nos ancetres les Gaulois" lost their old prestige and Vercingetorix was forced to step down from his horse. But the French invented another Gaulish hero, this time a truly fictional one. Asterix doesn't stand for the Gloria Yictis but the Gloria Victoribus. During the World Cup in 1998, a new Gaulish hero was born. Footix, fitting name for a gallus gallus (Gaulish rooster), was elected as the mascot for the Cup. And the "Bleus" defeated their transalpine adversaries, "Azzurris," in quarterfinal game to become world champions. A revenge for Vercingetorix?
