This article is part of a joint research project organized for investigating how the Digital Humanities are affecting historical studies in various countries and fields. I focus on eighteenth-century French history, the Enlightenment and the French Revolution in particular, to look into the new attempts to adapt the digital approaches to historical inquiries. In case of the Enlightenment, there have appeared many digital projects for illuminating the structure of the “Republic of Letters” and the history of books in a new frame. It is made possible because many historical sources have been already digitized by the prior projects of intellectual and literary history. In contrast, as a majority of the sources of the French Revolution have not been digitized, a variety of transnational efforts for constructing digital archives of the French Revolution are being under process. As a result, new digital history revamps the prior frames of historical studies, stimulates many discussions about historical methodology and facilitates the transnational turn by expanding digital archives. However, it should be warned that the power-knowledge structure inscribed in existing sources and archives can be reproduced here in a more extreme manner. I conclude that we need to prepare for a new turn by contemplating the meaning of this change within a longer history of historiography.
