Roger Chartier and other French historians on both sides of the Atlantic deny that some social/economic causes “necessitated” the French Revolution. Instead, they attempt to build up a more subtle and meticulous explanation of the Revolution by highlighting “cultural changes” during the Old Regime. These historians include Robert Darnton, Arlette Farge and Steven L. Kaplan, to name a few. One common intellectual background that put them together personally as well as academically is that they opened up a new horizon to cultural history in one way or another or were influenced by (but simultaneously contributed to) it.
Roger Chartier warns that historians should be more careful about setting up a causal relation between two facts. Teleological view necessarily misleads historians to the illusion that every incident has tangible origins. Nonetheless, he admits, historians could never explain their past without building up a relationship between what happened and what happened afterwards. In fact, this dilemma describes the difficulties haunting French historians. Chartier, in fact, represents a group of historians on both sides of the Atlantic sharing a similar view of the Old Regime France. Their various researches present a similar description of eighteenth century France in its relationship with the Revolution.
