Concerns on clean air quality are not new ones, but no more urgent demanding than the present. A recent survey(2000yr) shows that of all urban air pollutant emissions generated in Seoul City, 85.4% is from the transport sector. Automobiles are also major emission sources in Inchon City(81.5%) and Keyunggi Province (72.5%), compared to the national averaging emission ratio of 55.8%. Regional air quality is going to get worse as a result of increasing numbers of road vehicles and VMT.
Facing these problems, Seoul City, Keyunggi Province, and Inchon City have recently prepared a comprehensive 10-year air quality improvement plan (AQMP), including detailed action programs.
In accordance with sustainable transportation that can be described as moving people and goods in cleaner, greener, healthier, safer, and more equitable ways, this paper suggests current and on-going new deals for reducing transport-related air pollution. This incorporates both how control transport and what kinds of technology together which might help improve air quality in Seoul Metropolitan Area. To further maintain Seoul Metropolitan Area sustainable transportation, one of the necessary condition is the consideration of both an interregional and multi-sectoral forum, where air pollution issues can be tabled, discussed, and analyzed.
