This essay aims to explore the relationship between the 'Turner Prize' and its official and personal patrons, and to show how a patronage could make a national artistic competition of 'Turner Prize' successful and get it a prestige and a fame domestically and internationally. The 'Turner Prize' was brought about with the support of both Thatcher's government of the 1980s and private sectors consisting of rich and powerful persons who patronized the public purchase of works of art. It has settled in the institutional system of British society as its regulations for shortlist and winner were established over time. It has produced 116 shortlists and 25 winners from 1984 to 2009. The financial supporters for the prize have changed four times up to now. Oliver Prenn, Drexel Burnham Lambert, Channel Four Television Corporation, Gordon's Gin (Diageo Pic.) were they. Personal patronage of Charles Saatchi for some of shortlists and winners also played an important role to encourage them at their early stage of artistic success. Although all these personal patrons contributed their own private funds to the public sector of purchasing works of art, it was clear that they could get back the donated money through a tax deduction. In addition, ethical reputation could be imposed on them and their personal companies. This cooperation between a public sector of Tate Britain gallery and a private sector of patronage can be a good model to encourage any public and cultural event like the 'Turner Prize' in the future.
