The concept of patron and patronage has been transformed as the social system has changed in the twentieth century. This study is not only about the new aspect of patronage but also on its influence on the art itself.
The newly appeared patrons are collectors, museums, private foundations, galleries, dealers, critics. The indirect patronage as collection, exhibition, and criticism is the new kind of patronage which appeared in this century. For the development of a specific trend in contemporary art, the private and indirect patronage is more effective than the public and direct one.
The Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, the sample case of this study is the typical example of the modern patronage that has made enormous contribution to the establishment of the modernist art in the United States. Especially during the period of 1930-40, Hilla Rebay, the director of the ‘Museum of Non-Objective Panting’ which was run by Guggenheim Foundation, patronized abstract art exclusively. And Peggy Guggenheim, the niece of Solomon, who opened the ‘Art of this Century’ Gallery in New York from 1942 to 1947, imported the modernist art from Europe and promoted the future Abstract Expressionism. The effect of patronage of this foundation has extended today by enlargement of collection and space for exhibition.
In conclusion, the private patron with the spirit of avant-garde who supports the art by means of collection and exhibition based on financial resources is most effective for the formation of the main trend in art today.
