The introduction of new creative writing in the northern part of Nigeria is hereby briefly discussed only as a prelude to the development of literary works in Roman script. The British occupation of northern Nigeria introduced western education, government institutions, and publishing companies responsible for creative writing in Hausa. This first led to the establishment of the Translation Bureau in 1930 with Dr. R.M. East as the Director. To widen the scope of the activities of the Translation Bureau, it was renamed Literature Bureau in 1933, as a result of which the first Hausa novels were produced. The setting up of the North Regional Literature Agency (NORLA) in 1953 accelerated the production of Hausa literature. The role of NORLA was very important in producing creative writings in poetry, prose, and drama. It also evolved regional newspapers in local languages including Hausa, Igbo, and Yoruba. In 1967 the Northern Nigerian Publishing Company (NNPC) was formed on a commercial basis. The most prominent achievement of NNPC was in the publication of novels of new style and numerous plays. Recently, the growing number of Hausa writers and poets has compelled them to establish various Hausa authors associations, which are also responsible for the development of modern Hausa literature.
