Translating even within one language (intra-lingual translation) usually results in changes in form and sometimes in meaning of a text. It then means translating between two different languages will also result in changes between a source language (SL) and receptor (RL) language texts at such levels. Such changes are what are today considered as “translation shifts” in modern literatures of Translation today. The present paper seeks to establish this trend of cohesion shift in translation by investigating two source materials: Animal Farm (AF) and Gandun Dabbobi (GD). The former is the English source text material and the latter it’s Hausa translation. The study is able to establish about 22 different types of cohesion shifts. It also observes that there are some cohesion markers which have not yet been described by Halliday and Hasan (1976). These new cohesion markers are the major contributions of this paper in addition to illuminating the existence of the types of cohesion elements that operate in the Hausa language against the background of the types that exist in English.
