Developing alternative knowledge paradigms in/for Africa require the development of alternative methodologies and epistemologies. Since there are existing modes of knowing among the diverse cultures of Africa, the point is to understand the nature of these knowledge systems, and to seek to re-orient their value towards the goal of nation building. Clearly, this understanding must come from examining concepts and metaphors of value in Africa’s indigenous languages. In this article, the Hausa notion of mutuntaka is discussed as one such overarching conceptual framework through which other value-laden epistemes can be interrogated. Using existing paradigms of Afrocentric epistemology, e.g. Falola’s pluriversalism, narratives of great traditions, folklore and everyday encounters, the effects of mutuntaka are examined. These are then set against the backdrop of currents of dissent, recrimination and disavowal currently disabling rebirth and recovery of Africa’s forgotten knowledge systems and their utility as instruments of change and progress in nation-states, such as Nigeria.
