Since the European powers advanced to Africa, their culture has permeated into the cultures of the area. As a result novels, whose form is originated from the Western literary tradition, were started to be published by African writers in English from 1950s. It was an important turning point in the history of African literature.
Even if the early works were written in a language of colonial background, they described the problems that Africans faced at that time. Chinua Achebe, a Nigerian writer, published Things Fall Apart in 1958. In his first novel he dealt with the cultural impact caused by the European colonial rule in the African traditional society. Many African writers inspired by Achebe's work examined the consequences of colonialism in their works.
By publishing Weep Not, Child in 1964, Ngugi wa Thiong'o became the first writer who wrote a novel in English in East Africa. This work tells the story of the family of Njoroge, a student at a Christian School. Njoroge's naive beliefs that he would achieve social success and save his people through education are destroyed while his family go through hardship during the Mau Mau Movement, the independence struggle of Kenya. Ngugi's work had influence on Kenyan writers who shared the same experience with him about the Mau Mau Movement.
