This was written to show that "The Visitor" of Hwang Seok-young, presented a cue to overcome the metaphysics of division appreciating that the novel doesn't view the divided political systems through the biased philosophy but through the holistic thinking about the whole peninsula.
Especially "The Visitor" distinctively presents the change of division consciousness and ways of reconciliation. Generally the division consciousness defines the separation between South and North as the confrontation of two ideologies. Yet, "The Visitor" redefines this antagonism as the conflict between Marxism and Christianity. Furthermore, it offers the reconciliation through the exorcism or the traditional Korean folk religious practice which has long survived the historic cataclysm among the public, which is worth noticing.
In conclusion, reading "The Visitor" along the ritual development of Korean exorcism, we can see the problem of the division through a new window of recognition. Even in this new international context where the ideological hostility is dissolved, we witness in this novel the division has a strong grab at our consciousness. The separation is not a simple extension of two modem ideologies; Marxism and Christianity, but has a profound implication among the Korean people. In other words, the key to open the deadlocked division complications is 'in ourselves.' Therefore, to homogenize the cleaved peninsula, we, first of all, should get over the division in our heart. Without it, we will never be able to heal the gash in the nation.
Hwang Seok-young notes the reunification of this peninsula is not end but process and insists that under this divided system, the reunification process without any participation of the people cannot help settle the complications between ruling hierarchy and the public. Thus, we should review the division problems in the milieu of holistic entity of society. In this, "The Visitor" surpass the obstacle of conventional dichotomy and introduce a new and progressive frame of thinking the problems.
