]Roman Catholic Church was accommodated in the Chosun society in the late 18th century. Catholic, which was mainly accepted by some of the Southern scholars, started to disperse rapidly into the general public coming into the 19th century. The government deemed Catholic as a dangerous religion and implemented hard-line policies; but the believers kept increasing more and more.Many of the citizens who were dissatisfied with the nationwide corruption started to convert to Catholic, and the Catholic church accordingly made efforts to propagate Catholic. As a result, the Catholic church grew as a considerable force in the mid-19th century.To the most of the educated people who were arming themselves with Sung Confucianism, the dissemination of Catholic seemed like a crisis. The educated people of Chosun could not easily adapt to the doctrine of Catholic, and above all, worried that the local Catholic would give lead to foreign powers to penetrate into the Korean society. Therefore, among the educated, 'wickedness expulsion' movement started to gain support. Various literatures appeared concerning the movement, and the "Theory of Wickedness Expulsion," of Kim, Chi Jin was one of the representative publications of the time."Theory of Wickedness Expulsion," by Kim, Chi Jin occupies the most important position among all of the related literatures in the mid-19th century. Unlike other expulsion theories, the "Theory of Wickedness Expulsion," builds on its persuasiveness from its author, Kim, Chi Jin, who himself has infiltrated into the Catholic believers, thoroughly read the Catholic literatures, and investigated the customs of the believers. The book contains abundant and detailed explanations. The contents of "Theory of Wickedness Expulsion," is acknowledged as by far the best written, and is valued for its usefulness in understanding the perception on Catholic of the educated people in the 19th century.
