It is more than 200 years that catholic was introduced in Chosun, Catholic had been transmitted to Chosun by intellectuals who had desired social reform. At the early period, catholic believers had been undergone all sorts of hardships, But catholic has grown into the one of great religions in Korea nowadays.
However both catholic in Korea and in Roman seem to share the same religious traits, but in face, they don't. From a broader view, of course, they have the same bible, similar mass procedures. On the other hand, it is not hard to see the traits of Korean folk religion in Korean catholic church which are different from those of western countries. These peculiarities are caused by their undergoing hundreds of persecutions and union between catholic and folk religion. Therefore, the author think that the traits are hardly explainable within the context of catholic, and that they need to be construed in relation to the folk religion that Koreans have held long before the transmission of catholic.
In the manuscript, it is found that the special traits in Korean catholic church which are distinguished from those in Roman Catholic and attempted access to Korean catholic with own folk religion.
The essential argument of this paper rests on the following findings :
A. On occasion for the rite of the associate sacraments ;
(a) The rite of benediction is associated with offering a sacrifice to spirits cf folk religion.
(b) Preference for the Holy Object is related to talismans of folk religion.
(c) The rigorous rule of donation preparation is associated with that of fortune-teller's fee of folk religion.
(d) The funeral rites and the passage into a tomb of Korean catholic are related to traditional funeral of Korea.
B. On occasion for the rite of faith ;
(a) A seminar of the Holy Spirit is associated with a experience of spiritualism.
(b) The retreat is associated with sacrificial service to spirits and mountain prayer.
As mentioned above, Korean catholic church has many different traits that are comparable with those of Roman Catholic, and these are found to be associated with the various phases of Korean folk religion. And we can know that traits of folk religion in Korean catholic church had worked as the concrete process of the Koreanization.
Considering that the Koreans have lived under the influence of the base religion called ‘Folk Religion’ for over four thousand years, the process of receiving a foreign religion called Catholic may be natural to be different from the western society's. The parallelisms must be found in other religion as like Buddhism or Confucianism And these traits mentioned above need to be corroborated about whether they are common phase of Korean catholic church and whether they are found in only Korea.
