Wall inscription refers to the text or picture carved on the wall of temples, houses, bridges and other buildings for dissemination of information, comments and publishing of literature, calligraphy or painting works. Wall inscription in the form of text appeared since the Warring States Period. In the Eastern Han Dynasty era of Guangwu, it became a means of dissemination to issue official documents. In the mid-Tang Dynasty, wall inscription gained more popularity.
While in the Song Dynasty, it was considered a common and daily means of mass communication. Wall inscription in the Song Dynasty is alike to the Internet today. Although this primitive mode of dissemination might not have equivalent functionality with the advanced electronic technology of the Internet, they share some similar characteristics in terms of dissemination perspectives.
The similar characteristics of wall inscription in the Song Dynasty and Internet are open, free and spontaneous. Hence they bring about talents discovery, public petition and sales via advertisement. Similar to today's online forum where people post and others comment, wall inscription in the Song Dynasty often had the "comments on the posts" too. Dissemination and creation of wall inscription hence constitutes a cycle of close interaction between their networks. In the Song Dynasty, wall inscription led to a popular culture phenomenon in which carving and viewing inscriptions on the wall was part of people's daily activities.
