This study aims to examine the timely role of tomb inscriptions after the tombstones had been prohibited. Usually, tomb inscriptions are known to exist to give information about the deceased. However, as there are differences in components and contents of tomb inscriptions in different period of history, it is understood that the tomb inscriptions also reflect the needs of the times. One of the most distinct characteristics of tomb inscriptions during Western Jin was the disappearance of epitaph(銘辭). The epitaph that had been used to eulogize the deceased when the tomb inscriptions were buried became rare to find as there were fewer and fewer readers. Instead, the description of family relations became increased, which characterized the tomb inscriptions of Western Jin as a monument for the family and tribes. As for the tomb inscriptions of Eastern Jin, there were more of horizontal relations described among the family relations. That was resulted from the trend of independence of individual families in earnest. The epitaph reappears in the tomb inscription of Liu Song. It signifies that the eulogy for the owner of the grave was again becoming socially emphasized. This is related to the historical event that the Liu Song Dynasty did not acknowledge the titles of the old dynasty, but awarded titles on the basis of achievement and loyalty to the new dynasty. In short, the individual merits were regarded to be more important than the family privilege. Thus, the records revealing an individual's achievement, not the family superiority, became required. It was the main factor of the reappearance of epitaph that praised the virtues of the deceased.
