This study investigated topic variance and rhetorical task variance in a L2 essay-writing test, whose purpose is to help students prepare a national-wide teachers' qualification exam. The current study also explored the test-takers' perception on the difficulty level of the topic and the preferred prompt type. For the quantitative analysis, thirty students who majored in English education took a 50-minute timed essay test eight times in a semester. Two expert raters gave the analytic and holistic scores on a 15-point scale. For the qualitative analysis, thirteen students were requested to have a series of in-depth interviews. As a result, students received higher scores from the general topic than the field-specific and the educational topic. Across four prompts, the chart description topic produced the highest scores of all rhetorical types. From the interview, students responded that familiarity to the given topic is a significant factor to decide the difficulty level of the topic. In addition, they reported the difficulty of the argumentative prompt.
