This study shows the effect of triads on performance of ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) tennis players in networks of competition. Controlling for variables of individual players' abilities, the degree of triadic closure in the networks of matches has positive effects on the players' performance in a future tournament. This finding has an important implication for sociological theories of mobility and the labor market, because in mirroring ideas posited in economic theories, the professional tennis tournament is deliberately designed to restrain "adverse selection," and thus to sort out the best individual talents. The significant effect of triadic closure offers evidence that, even in the exceedingly atomized state of individual sports competition, social-structural forces prevail. Furthermore, triadic closure is measured with the players' match history, which is under no one's control. There is no way a tennis player can self-select into triadic closures. Similarly, it nicely serves the structuralistic ideal of sociology that social structure is independent of purposive action. By upholding the structuralistic ideals, I believe that we can address some theoretical problems in economic sociology and social capital theory using network analysis.
