The major activities of the Student Union 'Markomsnnia' in Prague University began on December 1st 1848. The unification between the Markomannia and the Montania under leadership of J.Rittig draw the public attention. Soon after Rittig was elected as the president, he tended to turn to the left wing idea from the middle, rejecting the values and traditions in which he had grown up.
Around 1849 the Students Unions under the influence of the revolutionary ideas of Bakunin. an anarchist in Europe, tried to destroy the old political system of the German area led by Rittig, who actively participated in the May-Uprising of 1848 until he was arrested with other the numbers.
The May-Uprising failed because of the lack of the public support from the society. To make the matter worse, the mutual cooperation between the Czech students and the German students did not work out well at the decisive moment.
The reason why the people in Prague and in Bohemia were not interested in the May-Uprising are:①the May-Uprising demanded too radical changes of the existing political system; ②the government too tightly controlled the students in the movement of Prague.
Nevertheless the activities of the Markomannia had important impacts on the society; the Markomannia prevented Austria from going back to its old system without the solution of the existing problem: the intellectuals began to believe that the Students Unions could contribute to the formation of the national state and the revival of citizen's power.
