The Cold War ended in the early 1990s. Nevertheless, we still struggle with Cold War Thought, the legacy of the Cold War; which must be fixed immediately. The Cold War has been basically characterized by the ideology. Thus, during the Cold War era, political parties of East and West camps have mobilized various means to derive their civilians’ loyalty and support, simultaneously fostering hostility toward the opposite camp. In that process, Cold War Thought was repeatedly reproduced. For example, as the ‘Red Complex’ in Korean Society, it is still dominant in the Post-Cold War era. Therefore, in order to overcome this legacy of the Cold War, it is crucial to examine critically how Cold War Thought was fostered and reproduced.
In such aspect, this paper examines the ideological and political education which East German government proceeded in order to inculcate the young generations with anti-capitalism and anti-West Germany thought, during the 1950s and 60s, when the East and the West confronted severely each other. To scrutinize this matter, I will analyze how East German regime took over the education field so as to establish the foundation of political education. Further, I will focus on the subjects closely related to political education such as history and social studies. It will help to analyze how Cold War Thought was inculcated to the students through school education. Furthermore, I will examine how political educations, based on Cold War ideology, were held in everyday life outside the school curriculum, and also discuss the reaction of East German students towards these educations, in and out of school. By all means, this paper will provide functional relations between the Cold War and Education. Moreover, this paper will critically examine how the Cold War has restrained the thought and action of human beings.
