This study aims to identify the effect of participation in swimming on the body image of middle-aged women. With this aim, the study conducted survey research targeted at 198 middle-aged women who regularly participated in swimming. Then, the study performed One-way ANOVA, correlation analysis, and regression analysis of the data by using the SPSS statistical program and obtained the following results.
First, there was a difference in the body image of participating middle-aged women by age. Namely, the aspiration for physical appearance was shown to be higher in women in their 30ties, and the aspiration for physical strength and health was found to be higher in women in their 50ties. Second, there was no difference in the body image of participating middle-aged women by educational background. Third, there was a certain difference in the body image by the level of participation in swimming. In other words, there was a difference in the aspiration for physical appearance by swimming period and in the aspiration for health by the frequency of swimming. Fourth, the period and frequency of swimming, which is a level of participation in swimming, affected the body image. This means that the longer period positively affected the aspiration for physical appearance, and the higher frequency and intensity of swimming affirmatively affected health.
When summarizing the above results, regular participation in swimming appears to enhance the middle-aged women’s satisfaction with their body image.
