This study is to investigate the contents of Chinse modern history part in the history textbook used in Chinese Middle School and to analyze the features of the change in recent revision of the textbook. As a result of the study we can see several features as follows.
First, it is completely a nationalistic history. It emphasizes the superiority of Chinese culture and people. In the description of the early modern Chinese crises, self-examination of the inner problems of China herself is rare or thoroughly excluded. They attribute all the crises of China to foreign powers or feudal class of China.
Second, the power of people is emphasized extremely. It is without doubt maintained that the people of China made heroic devotions in spite of the continuous national disasters, to form the China of today, and that the patriotic anti-foreign movement of the people has protected China, and anti-feudal struggle has promoted the revolutionary development of China.
Third, all the historical events are explained in the aspect of building Chinese socialistic revolution. In the process of anti-imperialistic, and anti-feudalistic movement, the concentration and growth of people's power and the effects and limits of reform movement caused socialistic movement to appear on the stage and eventually enabled the People's Republic of China to be built.
Fourth, they tried to change the contents, to complement the material and to alter the type of excercise questions to improve the teaching effects.
Considered that the exact recognition and proper explanation of the historical facts is the indispensible first step for historical consciousness, revised Chinese history textbook is needed to be analysed meticulously about its appropriateness. Moreover, the ferocious debates on the distortion of history among three nations of Korea, China and Japan demand an objective approach. And we also as Korean should be careful of how nearby nations recognize Korean history textbooks.
