This thesis analyzes the activities of Voitinsky in Shanghai during the period of May 1920-Dec. 1920 from the two perspectives of internationalism and socialist coalition. Before this period, the revolutionary movements in East Asia had proceeded sporadically and unsystematically. It was only at the time of early 1920 that the Russian Communist Party began in earnest to unify those various East Asian revolutionary movements into one organizational control. The sending of Voitinsky, an agent of Vladivostok bureau of the RCP, to Shanghai was one example of this embarking of the RCP. The ultimate purpose of Voitinsky's mission at that time was to establish a central organ to unify the revolutionary movements of Korean, Japanese and Chinese that had been interactive in Shanghai.
In order to find out the historical meaning of Voitinsky's mission and his activities in Shanghai during this period, the following two approaches are employed. First, it will be focused on the relationship between Voitinsky and Korean communists that was manifested especially in building of the temporary 'East Asian Secretariat' in Shanghai. This analysis strikingly reveals the rise and fall of Shanghai as a center of revolutionary movements in East Asia. The history of 1920 in Shanghai with Voitinsky actually serves as a good example to show a turning point of internationalism in East Asian revolutionary movements. Taking the side of Jinsun Park, not Voitinsky, the Comintern rejected the latter's request to build the 'East Asian Secretariat' but appointed Jinsun Park as a plenipotentiary exerting the full authority to control the revolutionary movements in East Asia. This decision of the Com intern illuminates internationalism innate in itself at that time. Since January 1921, not Voitinsky's 'East Asian Secretariat,' but Park's 'East Asian Communist Party' had emerged as a leading organ directing Shanghai to a new center of the revolutionary movements in East Asia.
Second, this thesis will examine the peculiar effort of Voitinsky to unify various socialist forces while focusing on the establishment of the Chinese Communist Group under his 'East Asian Secretariat.' The activities of Voitinsky during this period distinguished itself as consolidating various revolutionary forces into the ideological framework of socialism. The printing house of his 'East Asian Secretariat' was used not only by Korean, Chinese and Russian revolutionaries but also by Vietnamese, and supported publishment of various kinds of radical ideas including anarchism.
