The purpose of this study is to examine the ways in which Buddhist history is described in East Asian History textbooks, with the aim of providing directions for possible improvement. As is well known, the curriculum of East Asian History is mainly formed on the basis of Sadao Nishizima’s East Asian World Theory. The existing problems in East Asian History textbook accounts identified in this study are as follows:
First, the introduction of the concept of ‘National Buddhism’ as an attempt to characterize East Asian Buddhism is problematic in that it does not seem to consider the complexity of the relationships between the state and Buddhism.
Second, there appears to be numerous mis-representations of historical facts, especially in outlining Zen Buddhism in the Tang dynasty. Most importantly, little attempt is made to offer an overview of the major trends of East Asian Buddhism up to the 16th century.
Third, the coverage of the exchanges that took place between dharma-seeking priests in East Asian countries is confined to the ancient era, showing little sign of an awareness of cultural history of Buddhism in the Southern Song dynasty and the Mongol empire.
Finally, it is necessary to consider the recent interest in pan-Asian civilization centered around eastern Eurasia, which shows different understandings of Buddhist history in East Asia from those based on Nishizima’s theory. In conclusion, close attention needs to be paid to setting Buddhist history in East Asia within a framework of pan-Asian civilization centered around eastern Eurasia, going beyond the limited understanding of Buddhist history based on the theory of East Asian cultural sphere.
