In the late 1980s multiculturalism arose as a slogan in the culture wars. Soon the antagonism over national identity and culture spread across the United States. Conservative intellectuals began to complain about "political correctness" threats to their already marginal standing on campuses. They charged that multiculturalism was an attack on dead white European male and western civilization in general, and that critics of multiculturalism were automatically labeled and attacked as politically incorrect. A bitter national dispute over what the next generation of Americans should learn about their intellectual heritage ensued. Conservatives worried that multiculturalists were fragmenting America by focusing only on particular ethnic groups and distinct communities. In the mean time, academic leftists presumably supported multiculturalism. As the result, the whole country became a field of "identity politics."
Many historians and educators led the controversy to continue well into the nineties. Even though their discourse cover the wide spectrum of political beliefs, they can be roughly divided into two groups. The revisionists try to reinterpret American history and culture from the viewpoint of ethnic and racial minorities and women, and to apply their new interpretations and findings in education. On the other hand, the traditionalists strongly disagree with the textbooks and the curricula revised and inculcated by the revisionists.
This intense tight over multiculturalism and multicultural curricula would go on in the twenty-first century as long as the two sides sharply diverge on answering the question: which should be the main thought of America, republicanism of the early republic or the idea emerged from the counterculture of the 1960s?
