This paper attempts to analyse the Norway attacks 2011 and the UK riots of 2011 as an example of recent immigrants’ questions in Europe. Considering a resolution of the questions, it explores multicultural nationalism which is a new type of British nationalism created by New Labour.
On 22 July 2011 there were two sequential terrorist attacks against the government, the civilian population and a summer camp in Oslo. The terrorist Anders Behring Breivik argued that mainstream politics was failing to address the corrosion of Europe by Islamicisation and multiculturalism. In his view, Muslims are colonising Europe, helped by high birth rates and a doctrine of multiculturalism advocated by the European elite. This is not just a view of the terrorist but it is a common view of European far-rights. It is well known that far-right nationalist parties have achieved electoral success in many European countries, including British National Party in UK.
The riots of 2011 summer in UK were related to racial problems, although the government viewed the riots as a social disorder. Where British multiculturalism has failed has been its inability to address the economic marginalisation of black. It also seems that multicultualism is dead. Yet British multiculturalism has been reformed with nationalism by New Labour. New Labour have rationalised a turn to nationalist discourses given their longstanding association with the political right. Many Europeans think of multiculturalism as antithetical to nationalism. But the attempts by New Labour shows that multiculturalism and nationalism could coexist in a political concept as well as in a policy for integration of immigrants.
