The study of Korean manuscript Su-yang-oe-sa슈양외사 (1 volume) Owned by Nokwoodang in Haenam was translated from the Sui-Yang-di-Yan-shi隋煬帝艶史(8 volumes 40 chapters) the historical novelin MingDynasty.
ThestudyofKorean manuscript Su-yang-oe-saisdifficulttoknow the specific period of this book, it is certain that it might had been distributed and read after18th century atlatest.Comparing with the originalversion,the Korean manuscript Su-yang-oe-sahas some errors in spellings ofChinese pronunciation ofthe names ofcharacters,and title. Judging from this points, we can consider that this book is supposedtobetranslatedfrom anotherKorean version.
Ithadbeen taken thefaithfultranslation stylewiththeoriginalversion and contracted and omitted theunrelated poemsand dialoguesatonceto focuson thestoryitself.Thistranslation stylewould bethebetterimpact onthestorydevelopedrapidlyandthevolumesshortenedalso.
Generally old translation novels are good sources in the Korean philologicalstudy because itis abundantofword sources and easy to select the adequate Korean words for translation.We can guess this novelcopied in 19th due to the archaic words and expression styles. The study ofthe old translation novels such as Su-yang-oe-sawillbe very helpfulnot only to understand the introduction and translation styleofChinesenovelsofthosedays,butalsoexcavateKorean archaic words.Since ithad greatinfluence on the developmentand growth of the Korean old novels,it willbe a good materials to understand the distinctiveofKorean old novels.
