This study aims to explore university culture and traditional culture in 1980's Choi Il nam's novel 「Flowing drum」(1986). In particular, this study paid attention to the aspects of appropriation and succession through the activity of footprint circle descrived in Choi's novel 「Flowing drum」.
I adopted an oral statement data by Kim Jeong heon(2006) and college newspaper of Seoul natiomal university(1978~1986) as a lively argument for a discussion.
University culture in 1980's is in apposition with youth culture. In fact, it is a violent demonstration culture.
At that time, traditonal culture circle such as a footprint, a masque dance and a play in yard played an inflential role to instigate for masses. As everybody konws, unversity students in 1980's have a highly political awareness. they tried to break the power politics. However, it was quite weakend since the appearence of the coming young generation in 1991's.
There is a sharp conflict of three generations in Choi's novel 「Flowing drum」. there is between Min Seong gyu, unversity student and Min Dae chan, his father and Min Ik tae, his grandfather and his father. First of all, Min Seong gyu is an a young man of sprits and has a social criticism. On the other hand, his father Min Dae chan is a vulgarian snob and has an ambitious for success. Min Ik tae, an old man had leaded a fast life and an art for art's sake, So Min Seong gyu makes effort to accommodate all conflicts. Futhermore he tries to reappropriate traditional culture from a political demension.
We should attention to Choi's novel 「Flowing drum, founded on harmoney of generations as tradtional culture in 1980's and dynamics of masses.
