I told about the characteristics that《Revolution》(Seo, Ki-won’s historical novel) has relationship with postwar novel in this thesis. Korean writers have created novels about Dong-hak Peasants’ War since 1960s. Dong-hak is a sort of Korean national religion.《Revolution》is a historical novel originally. But it has many characteristics as a postwar novel. Revolution’s man Heon-ju, main character’s name, is a nobleman. He hopes to kill Jeon, Bong-jun who is the leader of Dong-hak war. So it makes readers misunderstand that Heon-ju rejects Dong-hak’s ideology. But there is no reason. He does not reject Dong-hak’s ideology but he questions the mean of war itself. War is the most tragic matter in Soe, Ki-won’s other novels. He has many postwar short stories and one novel. Those are Today and Tomorrow, A blank map, An Eve, An Embrace At This Ripened Night and so on.
Revolution’s subject matter is Dong-hak war. Peasants were defeated by governmental military and Japanese military in this war. Seo, Ki-won did not focus on Dong-hak revolution or movement but he depicted war itself. So it looks like a postwar novel. When we understand it as a postwar novel, we can Seo, Ki-won’s main idea clearly. He did want to make a commentary on government, elite group, and intelligent class.《Revolution》is a historical novel that has many characteristics of postwar novel.
