The great scholar in the middle age of Lee dynasty, Lee Su-Gwang<李?光 1563~1628> had several chances (1590, 1597 and 1611) to go to Peking" as an envoy mission. He was deeply acquainted with advanced Chinese civilization and could acquire the precious Seo-Hak (learning on West including civilization, culture, thoughts and science etc) through catholic missionaries stationed there.
Finally, he was respected as a pioneer in the study of western thoughts and Sil-Hak (實學) in Korea. Especially his book named Ji-Bong-Yu-SuI (芝峯類說) was the epoch-making work which exerted a great influence upon the views of life and world of Korean people, imbued with confucianism.
As a forerunner, he introduced Seo-Hak into Korea. But his 8th descendant Lee Yoon-Ha (李潤夏) became the most important person who advocated and expanded the doctrine of Seo-Hak. At last, he made a great effort to lead the religious movement. He wanted to reap the seeds of Seo-Hak sown by his forefather. His religious faith was banded down to his two sons and one daughter who died a martyr in 1801, 1827 respectively.
To understand. the unique scholarship of Lee Su-Gwang, I have made inquiry into his forefathers and his own life first of all. As a scion of King Tae-Tong's (太宗) first son, Kyong-Yong-Kun(敬寧君) Yo, (?), he passed the higher state examination at the age of 20, and until the end of his life at the age of 66, he had consecutively occupied the various government posts under the reigns of King Seon-Jo (宣祖), Kwang-Hae-Kun (光海君) and In-Jo (仁祖). His reputation was not shown in official service but in his excellent scholarship. He' left many poems and works through his 66-year life, and his name was known not only in home country but also in An-Nan(安南).
His remarkable achievements were the introduction of Mateo Ricci's 「Atlas of Europe」 and 「Chon-Joo-Sil-wi」. (天主實義) In his introducing process, he obtained the new Knowledge on Westand Catholicism. but his position is not criticism on them but merely a recommendation. But his west-introduced work inspired the opposition-minded intelligentzia and handed down to his descendants. At last they cast their lots with the practical movement of Seo-Hak. Lee-Yoon-Ha participated in establishment of Catholic church in Korea, and searched the way of belief through the study of Seo-Hak book and Religious endevor.
In short, Lee Su-Gwang's families introduced the western matters to' Korea first, and devoted themselves to the practice of Seo-Hak in this land, and put up with pains as a matyrdom-ridden lineage for Catholicism.
