This article aims to compare Foucault and Certeau's thought on powers and mystics. Interestingly these two thinkers suggested analogical viewpoints on the madness of early modern France and the panopticism in modern society. Foucalt focused in 『Folie et Deraison. Histoire de la folie a l'age classique,』(1961) and 『Les Anormaux』(1975) archaelogical research to the madness and mysticism. Certeau also searched similliar themes in 『La possession de Loudun』(1970). Furthermore Foucault surveyed mechanism of panoptical surveillance of bio-power on human body in 『Surveiller et punir: naissance de la prison』(1975). Certeau also noted tacts of people to panoptical power in 『L'invention du quotidien 1. arts de faire』(1980) as well.
On possessed nuns at Loudun, Foucault thought that the cause of this accident was due to a new technique of power operation with 'witch hunting' by Catholic Church authority to overcome divisions of the Reformation. Meanwhile, Certeau differently explained it as an accident of linguistical expression of repressed interior of nuns in radically changed circumstances after the Reformation and the thirty years Huguenot War.
And Foucault asserted that panoptical disciplinary power of 'Panopticon' formulated by Jeremy Bentham in late 18th century, was realized in the contemporary society. But on the contrary Certeau questions a potential possibility of realizing a totalistic power by panoptical power that contains multidiretional expansive ability and thus reduce functions of all society to singular ruling organization. Instead Certeau saw the panoptical power as the one that would be counter-supervised by tacts and intrigues of the people.
