First, social studies on members of Balhaes ruling class, including the Suryeong, royal family, and the aristocracy, have been conducted despite the limited amount of historical materials on the subject. However, there have only been a limited number of studies on the masses. Moreover, this trend is not limited solely to the social sphere. In order to rectify this problem, excavations of the areas where the common people lived, such as a local or village unit, will have to be carried out.
Second, with regards to the economic sphere, proper attention needs to be paid to the achievements of the agriculture related studies based on the Hapkye Taessi Jokbo genealogy of the Hapkye Tae family-carried out by North Korean scholars; to the study of handicrafts, with an archeological focus, carried out by Russian scholars; to the studies on trade, with a special focus on international exchanges during the Balhae Dynasty, conducted by Japanese and Korean academia; as well as to the study on the currency system carried out by Chinese scholars. However, the Hapkye Taessi Jokbo should be used with caution because of questions regarding its legitimacy as a historical material. Moreover, the handicrafts study carried out by Russian scholars needs to be translated into Korean so as to make it more accessible. Furthermore, it is expected that the results of the trade study will produce more detailed research that will result in helping Korean scholars develop new historical views about East Asia countries, increasing excavations of historical materials, and the usage of these excavated results. Finally, while the study of the currency system conducted by Chinese scholars has contributed to raising the level of understanding of Balhaes distribution channels, further studies on the subject will be difficult without the development of new study methods and the excavation of historical materials.
In addition, there is a need, once new study methods have been developed and excavation of remains have been carried out, to conduct studies on the characteristics of the society, its 24 stone remains, population, as well as the metric system of weights and measures used by the people of Balhae.
The research on Balhae that has been carried out so far has been conducted with limited resources. Firstly, these studies have been carried out with an almost complete lack of historical records. Second, currently researchers are basing their studies of the Balhae dynasty on their own national vision of history. Once again, these trends are not limited to the social and economic spheres.
To overcome these limitations and objectively restore the history of Balhae, there is a need to promote the kind of international exchanges through which scholars can exchange study results. Such international exchanges are closely related to academic studies. The usage of the anthropological materials uncovered during excavations in Chinese and Russian territory, where Balhae originated, will help overcome the lack of literature-based materials.
