As of December 2002, total of 713 articles and books are reported to be treating the subject of Balhae culture. Among those works, 362 pieces were authored by the Chinese scholars, 63 were by the North Koreans, 71 were by the South Koreans, 112 by the Russians and 105 by the Japanese. Works concentrating on this particular subject occupy 28.8% of all of the existing 2,477 pieces of work dedicated to the Balhae history. Archaeological research is the most prominent area among them. But studies that highlight other vital areas such as literature, education, Buddhist and Confucian philosophies, games, music, clothes and customs are very few to say the least. The overall cultural studies of the Balhae dynasty is still in its infant stage, and a lot of work has to be done.
Currently we do not have any hugely controversial issues regarding the Balhae culture at this point, yet the glaring exception might be the matter of properly understanding the nature of the Balhae dynasty's culture itself. It seems that each of every researchers is expressing considerably nationality-based opinions, instead of opinions based on the researcher's individual expertise and independent researches. In their researches Chinese scholars mainly focus on the Malgal(Mohe in Chinese) qualities of the Balhae culture and also elements of the Chinese Tang dynasty which would have had considerable influence upon the Balhae culture. Yet Korean scholars(either South or North) and the Japanese scholars are more drawn to the Goguryeo factor. Then the Russian scholars demonstrate a rather unique viewpoint basically concentrating their attention on the Malgal elements, while also considering other various factors such as the Siberian or Central Asian influences.
These differences are mainly due to the general lack of material exchanges among researchers of various countries. In order to bridge the gaps and bring ourselves closer to the rightful understanding of the Balhae history, active efforts of information exchange would have to be made among fellow scholars, and the government also should not hesitate to support those efforts.
