The majority of the relics from the Balhae era in Japan can be found in the Hokuriku region (an area that includes Toyama, Ishikawa, and Fukui Prefectures), and in the Kinki region (which encompasses Osaka, Kyoto, and Nara). In terms of regional characteristics, while the relics uncovered in the Hokuriku region revolved around the ports where the Balhae delegations arrived. those in the Kinki region, where the capital of ancient Japan was located, consisted of items that were exchanged with the Balhae delegations, such as wooden tablets, ancient documents and ginseng. To this end, excavations and collections conducted during the Japanese imperial period revealed that Balhae-related remains introduced after the start of the modern era were housed in various places.
As the Balhae kingdom did not leave behind any official records, there can be said to be a relative dearth of documentary materials when compared to other Korean kingdoms. In addition, the difficulties accessing the three northeast provinces of China that at one time belonged to Balhae has greatly impacted the ability to make use of the materials found in these three provinces. On the other hand. the steady stream of excavation projects carried out in the Hokuriku region, and in particular in Ishikawa Prefecture and Heijokyo where the capital of Japan was located at the time, is expected to result in the collection of new materials related to Balhae in the future. As such. it is urgent that the long-term based investigation and collection of Balhae related relics and remains in Japan be carried out in an organized manner.
Furthermore, it is necessary to further develop the study of people who migrated to Japan from the Korean peninsula. For example, it is well-known that Baekje migrants participated in the building of Taga Castle and in the erection of the Monument at Taga Castle. In this regard, while existing studies have focused on the exchanges betweenthe Korean peninsula and Japan that took place in the Kyushu and Kinki regions, it is vital that the eastern sea area of Japan and areas along the Pacific Ocean such as Miyagi Prefecture be included in such inquiries in the future.
