I have looked into the relationship between Balhae and Japan during mid 8th century. The analyses were based on the articles in the edition of <History of Japan) which describes the relations between the two nations. I have found that Balhae's geographical advantage of being located in the midway between Dang Dynasty and Japan, Balhae has willingly accepted Japan's intent to establish relationships. Balhae provided informations on Dang Dynasty to Japan and convoyed kyundangsa (delegates). It means Balhae intermediated between Dang and Japan. Motivations for Balhae to accept Japan's demand for interchange is largely based on economical needs. In formal trade between Balhae and Japan, I have found that while Balhae sent comparably few items to Japan, namely leather and ginseng, Japan brought high quality clothes such as cotton and silk.
It shows that Balhae had an advantage over Japan in formal trades. Considering the fact that Shilla promoted practical diplom acy through trade based interchange which sought for large scale trades, it is evident that the purpose of Balhae's exchanges with Japan was economical reasons. Yet, the lack of historical materials makes it hard to validate the relationship between Balhae and Japan. More research will be done to supplement present findings in future studies.
