The unofficial history, compiled during the whole period of the Chosun Dynasty, offers a far-reaching basis for understanding the current history of the Chosun Dynasty dependent upon such historical materials around official circles as Sillok (실록) and Seungjungwonilki (승정원일기).
In the first period of the Chosun Dynasty, the compilation of an unofficial history did not develop actively because there was the taboo on an unofficial history according to the difference of the visual angle for the Revolution as well as the lack of understanding for the value of an unofficial history and the currency of compilation mainly dependent on official history books by established institutions for historiographers. But, some Hungupa(훈구파) officials began to compile an unofficial history for the purpose of supplement for a rude and unscrupulous authentic history in the late period of the 15th century. After the 16th century, an unofficial history was compiled in earnest along with appearance of Sarim(사림), a new political power. and the then various trends of the times. The compilation of an unofficial history was more active in the late of the Chosun Dynasty than other ages.
Kim Ryeo, an editor of Hangokwanwuisa(한고관외사) which was a masterpiece among the collections of an unofficial history compiled in the late of the Chosun Dynasty, adopted both the political inclination of Sipagye(時派系) and the academic traditions of Nakron(洛論) in Seoul. He had more interest in non-official sketches circulated among the people and an unofficial history than in pure and upright ancient writings and an authentic history. During the ten year life of banishment for his Catholicism(西學), he tried to solve problems concerning public welfare which he saw and heard directly facing up to the reality without abandonment and avoidance. He attempted to compile the collection of an official history for the purpose of arranging and systemizing history with such consciousness.
Kim Ryeo's consistent intention for compilation and concrete historical consciousness are revealed clearly in the epilogue of Hangokwanwuisa. He recognized both an unofficial history and an authentic history without discrimination, described in detail the history and culture of the present generation with an objective historical description and an arrangement of historical conception and significance. He wrote about the historian's attitude toward description of history, problems issued by distortion and embellishment of history, and historical instructions.
The most important significance of his writing is its some effect on compiling collections of an unofficial history in the late of the Chosun Dynasty, much endeavor on collecting the original copy, a careful contrast among various different versions. and a scrupulous correction.
His book, Hangokwanwuisa, is also valuable in respect that it collects widely an unofficial history dealing with the history of the present generation in the Chosun Dynasty and offers an important basis for understanding the history and culture of the Chosun Dynasty in the beginning of the 19th century. Hangokwanwuisa is the result of Kim Ryeo's enriched historical perception and is very useful to understanding the significance and characteristics of the compilation of a collection of an unofficial history in the late period of the Chosun Dynasty.
