A critical consciousness was enlarged by using a wide form and historical materials in the compilation of an unofficial book of history in the early Joseon Dynasty. The compilation of an unofficial book of history was more highly developed than before through an attempt of systematizing along with its massive contents. The irregularities and corruption of officials and intellectuals was boldly recorded through not a false report but a sharp indication of current political affairs. Moreover, a strong critical vision was reflected in an unofficial book of history.
An unofficial book of history is a direct record of the author′s personal experience. In respect that the recorders were the incumbent Hungu-Party(勳舊派) officials, their wide personal experiences of bureaucratic lives and human relations were more real than any other record. It is important that the object of recording is an episode related to persons in those days. Therefore, these articles can compensate for the omitted facts in the authentic history Joseon by the government, and have an significant meaning as historical materials.
The selectors of an unofficial book of history are closely connected in an appreciative eye for reality, a historical view, a literary direction, writing activity, and a joint use of handed-down materials. In an unofficial book of history, there are many keen critical attitudes toward wide pathological phenomena and problems in politics, economy, society, and ideology in those days through a figurative method.
An unofficial book of history is not a simple interesting fiction but a significant report for the purpose of the record and transmission of an inside history of the society. An unofficial book of history is a true reflection on a political reality and a lesson acquired in the course of running a national government. Although an unofficial book of history has an important meaning in the respect of recording an inside history of can-be-overlooked facts in the course of leading the political situation, it has a limit that cannot reflect all ideologies and recognitions out of office because it was mainly compiled by the Hungu-Party in power. But, if we analyze the contents and characteristics of an individual unofficial book of history, those problems can be solved.
