This paper aims to analyze the errors of Korean EFL learners in pronouncing the English interdental fricatives /?/ and /ð/ and to explore the patterns of substitution within the framework of Optimality Theory and Dispersion Theory. The error analysis was conducted by the classification of position within the words; word-initial position, word-internal stressed syllable, word-internal unstressed syllable and word-final position. This paper proposes that a single ranking of constraints can explain both [s?] substitution of /?/ and [t] substitution of /ð/ by Korean learners when IDENT[aspiration] is applied to the analyses. Moreover, from the viewpoint of Dispersion Theory, substituting sounds are chosen in the light of maintaining the auditory distance of voiced-voiceless pairs.
