This study aims to examine Duk-Mu Lee's gender consciousness, considering 'Sa So Jeul (section about the way of life for confucian scholars)', and one of his works, as a discourse on gender that reflects gender consciousness, and the politics and culture of that society in those days. In this study, his gender consciousness is examined focusing on his thoughts concerning moral virtue, role, education, and domestic economy. As a result, what's found is that his thoughts that woman's role as a daughter-in-law together as a mother takes precedence over her role as a wife. He emphasizes that a woman's Life should be devoted towards how to make their family prosperous as the daughter-in-law of a family rather than how to make her own life independent. Accordingly, since it is regarded that thought pursuing an obedient daughter-in-law is derived from this kind of background, the role as a 'wise mother and good wife' that have been idealized as the woman's traditional model should be considered as a creative concept of the modem ages.
His gender consciousness is still placed under the category of Confucianism at that time. However, it has the specific characteristic of emphasizing the point that a woman's abilities to assist the domestic economy should be put to practical use. In conclusion, he helped toward consolidating the political control of the ruling class as well as maintaining man's authority together with his power of control over women while he was confronted with poverty caused by being among the faction out of political power.
